The Grand Prix winner for the best film at the Montreal International Film Festival is an intimate love story with three people living in the same building in the center of Zagreb.
Heroes differ in terms of social status, sexual orientation, political and religious beliefs, but they are connected not only by the place in which they live, but also by the demons of the past, closely linked to the difficult history of Serbo-Croatian relations.
Vjeko is a 60-year-old high school teacher who devoted his entire life to exploring Croatian history and language. He lives in a neglected place together with his father, being taken to bed by a former officer of Ustasy, a fascist Croatian army. To make matters worse, Vjeko's partner, cello Bobo, died tragically.
Desperate to live hero only joy is found in the evening walks during which provocatively wandering around the city in make-up and feminine clothes. One night she is beaten by a group of teenagers until she is unconscious. At the Maja Hospital, a fifties nurse arrives, recognizes in Vjeko the tenant of the same tenement house whose cellar is inhabited.
May helps Vjeko get home, where she starts to look after not only him but also his crippled father. In return, Vjeko agrees to help her husband, the dyslexic policeman Ante, prepare for the exam in the Croatian constitution. Ante is a Serbian, and only in this way is he still encountering trouble at work.
So begins the story of three completely different people who unexpectedly and against their will depend on each other.
